"From moss-draped trees to big city attractions, the [Natchez/Woodville area] also features stately mansions, cannon-lined battlefields and rich southern history. Jefferson Davis grew up here, just down the river from where Union troops began their famous assault on Vicksburg. A trek to the Capital/River Region leads to Natchez and one of the greatest collections of pre-Civil War homes in America. It also leads to the state capital, Jackson, with its new Museum of Natural Science. From the State Capital to historic Woodville, this is one of Mississippi’s grandest regions and it’s waiting to be explored."

"Experience the legendary mystique of the Delta Region along with the exciting casinos of Tunica, Lula and Greenville. And, of course, there’s the Blues. Celebrated bluesman Robert Johnson is said to have lost his soul here. The heart of his music lives at Clarksdale’s Delta Blues Museum. Sacred Native Indian mounds dot the Delta earth, just a short hop from Leland, birthplace of the frog known as Kermit. Catfish and southern culture are both served in big helpings throughout the Delta Region. Directions to this storied region are easy: Look for cotton and a mighty big river."
Read more from the Mississippi Tourism Association. Greenville, MS is a jewel of the Delta region. It’s beauty is timeless. Each October, I look forward to the Delta Hot Tamale Festival, a must attend cultural event for the region helmed by my good friend and writer Julia Reed, a Greenville MS native. Julia helps bring together local and regional writers of national importance for literary salons and lively discussions. Of course, the tamales are not to be missed! And the genial conversation, over cocktails in this quintessential MS delta town, brings it all together for me. You might also enjoy this introduction to the Greenville area that accompanied Anthony Bourdain’s foray into the region for his CNN Parts Unknown show.
